Summer Jobs For Teens

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed for even more money making ideas.

The main thing that I wish to impress upon you while visiting my site is that you will not get rich looking through the want ads. While it can lead you to job opportunities, it will lock you into a schedule that prevents you from enjoying your summer. Every where you look here, you will find ideas that allow you to set your own schedule and work for yourself. Open your mind and think outside the box. Don’t settle for a greasy apron and hair net. You will also find stories of teens and pre-teens that started there own business and made a million bucks before they graduated high school (and they did not do it flipping burgers.) If they can do it, so can you! Here is a starter list to get your brain started. And you will notice that they are basically “start your own business” kink of things.
Babysitting

Are you the responsible type? It’s hard for find a good babysitter and for that reason in high demand. Grown ups still need time to be alone or run errands. As much as they love there kids, they still need time away. A reliable babysitter will get passed around too. Parents have a way of talking to each other ans asking if they could recommend some one to watch over the wee-ones for a few hours. Word of mouth could grow your reputation and pocket book.

Yard Work

One of the most physically demanding, yet profitable ways of earning spare cash over the summer months is yard work. People like there yards to look good but some times over shoot it and find that the upkeep is just to much. If you have the right tools, go beyond just mowing the grass to trimming the bushes, weeding, planting flowers, or trim the edges of the sidewalk.

Pool Maintenance

If you know what you are doing, maintaining a pool is one of those summer jobs for teenagers that can keep you quite busy. Much like a good looking yard, people like to keep there pool clean and running efficiently but lack the time or desire to do the upkeep.

Local Parks and Zoos

If you love the outdoors, one of the best summer time jobs for a teenager is working with the local, state, or national parks in the area. You might be able to work on the maintenance crew and be responsible for helping keep the park clean and functioning properly. And about summer break hits, the new animals at the zoo need attention and I know that my local zoo is all ways looking for help.

Camp Counselor

One thing I am grateful for is that my son is a Star Scout going for Eagle. He looks forward to going to summer camp actually. This year he will be part of the leadership teem. Though he won’t get paid for it this year – he is a shoe in for next summer. Depending on where you live, campgrounds are always needing upkeep. City, state and national parks look for summer help all the time to keep the area safe and clean for the next generation of campers.

Clean Some Gutters

Out of site and out of mind… Gutters are still there and need cleaned out. (if your not afraid of heights that is.) Maybe just mention it while doing some of that yard work or after a good rain. When they are all backed up water spills over everywhere, then by the time it stops raining people just forget about them again. This is just one example of opening the door by spotting an opportunity.

Get Cooking

If you enjoy cooking or baking, you might also want to consider making homemade delicacies for people and bringing them to their workplace for lunch. Or, offer your services for catering a small function.

Get on the Net

The Internet has taken down the walls and people from all walks of life and of all age groups can put it to there advantage. If you have a large friend list in MySpace or FaceBook you are all ready primed to setup an affiliate account and start earning a commission. Instead of posting stupid stunts on You Tube you could be using that same effort to make a video about a product you are trying to sell. Social Sites and networking are the life blood of making money on the Internet.

Help at a Garden Center

As a young lad, my first real job was de-tasselling corn back in Indiana. It was hot, hard work but paid well. Maybe you don’t live in the corn-belt, but local gardening centers also are in need of seasonal help.

Teaching Computers

Not to be mean or anything… But I know A LOT! Of older folks that get a computer for Email only. Not only can’t they figure out how to set that up, They ask what the big blue “e” is on there desktop for. If they click on anything other then there Outlook button they get lost. This could be the easiest money you can make from your neighbors.

Get Your Creativity Shine

Throughout this site, you will find ideas on what you can do to make money. But all successful people took an ‘off the wall’ idea and monopolized on it. You could take photos and turn them into coffee mugs. Setup a booth at the local swap meet and sell those. Arts and crafts, use your imagination. (remember the pet rock?) People don’t mind paying for originality and a job well done. So take pride in yourself and your work. It will show and make you more ‘hirable’

Making Money With Your Photography

Yes, you can make money from your photos. Thanks to the Internet, it’s now easier than ever toreach buyers with your photography. You can sell your pictures and thereby become a published, professional (or at least “semi-pro”) photographer. There are thousand of folks doing just that. The thing you have to consider is “What is going to make my photos stand out?” It will take some time and effort, but some methods are quicker then others.

The quickest, highest paying but most difficult way to sell your photos are by direct marketing… selling straight to the publishers of Web sites , postcards, notecards, books, advertising, and magazines. Of those, magazines should be where you start. To begin selling to magazines, hit your grocery store and pick up 3-5 magazines that you enjoy the look of. Then, sit down and really study the photos that they include with their articles. Pinpoint the style of photography that the magazine uses most often - and honestly decide whether your style matches that, or if you could easily match it.

After you’ve found a magazine that fits your style, Sent in a few sample COPIES of your work along with a self-addressed stamped envelope to the photo editor. Never send the same photographs to different publishers until you’ve heard back from the first. If you send the same photos to separate magazines, and they both want to use them, you’ve just opened a can of worms before you even got started. It might be tempting to send your best work to several magazines, but now comes the hard part – you must wait.

Another method of making money from your photography is through PHOTO STOCK SITES. The 3 big ones are - Getty, Corbis and Jupiter. Even though you won’t make as much money per sale of your photos, people know and trust these sites so you stand to sell more of your work. Differing agencies provide differing prices, commissions, qualities, and subjects, but they share one thing in common: licensing. Yes, licensing. That is a whole new arena and one that will need looked into if your going to make some real money.

Listed below are a handful of sites that sell photographs for a commission:

Like most things, you can find information for free on the internet, but to speed up the process, some one has already put together the resources and tools you need to spend more time clicking your camera instead of the mouse button. DigiCamCash just came out in April of 2008 so it is the most up to date information you will find in one spot.

Make Money Putting on Magic Shows

Maybe not this summer, but you could plan ahead. Entertaining at children’s parties could earn you some weekend cash. Every one loves a good magic show, the younger crowd even more. A 30 minute show could pocket you $25 easy. Learning tricks is pretty much free to begin, just the cost of a deck of cards and there are dozens of online magic shops that have inexpensive props.

Learning magic tricks and magic illusions can be a fun and relaxing. Focusing on a new skill, much like learning a musical instrument, is calming and reduces stress. In turn - making a healthier you and improving your brain function.

Point is that you never know where life will lead you… This idea came from reading an article about Tyler Dikman. Back in 2002, Tyler was 17 and on his way to a $1 Million dollar year. He was president and CEO of CoolTronics.com — a firm that sells, delivers and sets up computers. Ya see, he is a Teenage Tycoon who started out making $15 and hour selling lemonade at the age of 5. Then by 10 he was making $25 a show doing magic shows at children’s party’s. He was driven to be successful and his greatest asset was the ability to relate and talk to customers at such an early age.

You can read the whole story of how he went from lemonade boy, to magician, to millionaire in 12 years here…

  • Make Money at Home: Tutoring

Home tutoring service is a small business that requires hardly any finance or training compared to other businesses. This service is a brilliant option for housewives and mothers with small children. They generally have a lot of time on hands and this investment proves to be the ideal small-scale business. Apart from that, this home business provides time flexibility, since the tutor only needs to spend a few hours each day, tutoring. This can be done in leisure time or at a time set aside.

The details that should be taken care of initially are marketing and advertising the service. There are many ways by which tutoring services can be marketed. The first and easiest way is to distribute handbills and place small advertisements on the bulletin boards of local stores. Parents easily identify with the advertisements and call for a tutoring engagement, almost immediately. Tutors can also draw attention to their services and credentials by mailing the information, within the area.

A tutor does not essentially need to have a degree in teaching, to qualify. Teaching experience does help in building a profile, as parents are more confident about an experienced tutor. The possible earnings from a home tutoring service, depends on the efforts and the commitment of the tutor. If more time is allocated to tutoring, then more income will be generated.

The targeted community includes students from primary, middle and high school. One of the factors that influence the success of a home tutoring service is the level of education and guidance provided to the students. This is measured by the results attained by the students. When a student scores well in a subject the efficiency of the tutor is advertised by word of mouth. Parents generally make good recommendations if they are satisfied with the tutor.
